As the manager of Tasmania’s public production forests, Sustainable Timber Tasmania has a role to play in managing swift parrot nesting and breeding habitat.

Before harvesting, Sustainable Timber Tasmania plans how swift parrot habitat will be managed. These details are included in a certified Forest Practices Plan.

Sustainable Timber Tasmania surveys the area before harvesting to locate swift parrot nesting or foraging habitat. Where swift parrot nest trees are identified and recorded, they are protected from harvesting (felling).

Sustainable Timber Tasmania also runs a Swift Parrot Monitoring Program each summer to keep watch of how the birds are nesting and breeding in public production forests. The program helps Sustainable Timber Tasmania make decisions on how best to manage swift parrot habitat.
